Provided by AGPSpeaking according to reports, Guido D'Urso, a professor specializing in agricultural hydraulics, irrigation, and remote sensing at the University of Naples Federico II, emphasized that protecting fertile land in the Mediterranean from increasingly severe weather conditions is essential not only for preserving agricultural areas but also for avoiding major production losses that could severely affect farmers.
He explained that growing climate pressures are making water resources increasingly critical throughout the Mediterranean region and globally, particularly in agriculture, which remains the largest consumer of water supplies.
D'Urso noted that modern technologies already provide the necessary tools to monitor environmental conditions, prepare for climate-related disasters, and identify weaknesses before crises emerge.
He added that while irrigation and water use are widely discussed topics, conversations often remain too general and lack standardized practical implementation.
"Water accounting procedure should be standardized in such a way that in every place, we know exactly how much water is available, where this has to be used for civilian, industrial, agricultural use. So, this makes all the allocation policies much more transparent to everybody.
"This is quite easy to implement from the theoretical point of view, but in practice, this is facing a lot of problems because the water sector is ruled by different authorities. Inevitably, there are conflicts and availability of objective data. We have to take this into account in order to make the entire hydrological process more transparent and how we use water resources for a better management," he said.
