New Carriage Museum Facility Opens at Rose Hill Manor Park & Museums
Frederick County officials and community partners gathered Wednesday, September 16, at Rose Hill Manor Park & Museums to celebrate the completion of the new Robert H. Renneberger Carriage Museum facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“This new facility is an important investment in preserving Frederick County’s history,” said County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “Projects like this strengthen our commitment to preserving the places, collections, and stories that help tell the history of Frederick County while creating opportunities for residents and visitors to experience them firsthand.”
The 6,000-square-foot, climate-controlled facility provides a new home for Rose Hill Manor’s collection of more than 26 historic carriages, sleighs and wagons. The new facility replaces the original carriage museum, which opened in 1976, and provides expanded space and modern environmental controls to better preserve and showcase the collection.
The new facility creates opportunities for visitors to explore the history of transportation and learn how travel evolved over time. The collection offers a look at the variety of ways people traveled and transported goods throughout history, while helping connect visitors to the lives and experiences of the people associated with Rose Hill Manor.
“This new space gives us an opportunity to tell a more complete story about transportation and the role it played in the lives of the people who lived at Rose Hill,” said Kari Saavedra, Recreation Manager for Frederick County Parks & Recreation. “With expanded exhibit space and improved climate controls, we can better care for this collection while creating more opportunities for visitors to explore the history of travel in a hands-on and engaging way.”
The project was funded through the State Capital Budget and the Frederick County Capital Budget. Its completion coincides with the 50th anniversary of the carriage collection and the nationwide commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to tour the new facility and view the historic collection.
